  1. Power Cycle: Turn off the Xbox One, unplug the power cord, and wait 10 seconds before plugging it back in. Power it on and check if the issue persists.
  2. Check your console's air vents for obstructions: Ensure no foreign objects are blocking the ventilation openings on the Xbox One. Dust and debris can accumulate over time and impede the fan's operation. Ensure the outside of your console is clean and the air vents are debris-free.
  3. Listen for your console's cooling fan: Listen for the hum of your console's internal cooling fan when you start up your console. This can tell us if your console's cooling fan is getting power. You might need to jump to the Faulty Fan Section if you cannot hear your fan spinning or attempting to spin.
  4. Ensure your console is in a proper environment: If your console is heating up, but your fan is spinning freely, then make sure that your console is not near any heat sources that could be heating the air around the console. Your console's ideal ambient air temperature should be between +5ºC (+41ºF) to +35ºC (+95ºF).

Causes

1

If your Xbox has been running in a dusty environment, the accumulation of debris can prevent the fan from running.

  • Avoid placing the console in enclosed spaces or on surfaces that obstruct airflow. This includes the inside of cabinets or on soft materials like carpets. Keep 4-6 inches of open space between your console's vents and any objects.
  • Clean the console's internal cooling fan. If you've already cleaned the exterior of your console and that has yet to resolve the issue, you can access your console fan directly by following the official fan guide (follow up to step 19 to get access to the fan).
2

If the fan does not run when the Xbox One is turned on or continues making terrible noises after being cleaned, there is likely an issue with one or more of the internal components.

  • Check the console's fan for any damage or warping. Ensure your Xbox's cooling fan is spinning correctly in its housing, is connected, and receives power from the motherboard. Replace the malfunctioning fan with a new fan if needed. Follow the official Xbox One Fan Replacement Guide to replace your console's fan.
  • Look at your Xbox's Heatsink for dust build-up. Make sure that the Heatsink's fins are clean and free of debris.
  • Replace the thermal compound underneath the Heatsink. Most thermal compounds become less effective over time, mainly when used in a system with heavy use. Consider changing out your thermal compound if you have had your system for an extended period.
  • Perform a thorough visual inspection of the console's boards for any signs of burns or damaged components. Disassemble your device and observe the motherboard. Look for any burnt or damaged components. Make sure all necessary components are plugged in correctly.
