Xbox One Disc Stuck in Disc Drive

If the disc drive on your Xbox One is being clingy and just won't let go of your favorite disc, despite repeatedly pressing the eject button or fuddling with software eject options, you've come to the right place. Read on for solutions to help you solve your problem and get your beloved game disc back from the clutches of the disc drive.

Before you can start diagnosing the problem, it's imperative to get your disc out of the drive. We can start with the software options:

  1. Restart the console to reset any software that might be glitching. You can do this by pressing and holding the Xbox button in the center of the controller, selecting Restart console from the menu, and confirming by pressing Restart.
  2. Try pressing the eject button next to the disc slot. Note that if this works, you were likely just experiencing a software glitch and your problem is solved!
  3. Try using the device's UI to trigger a disc eject. Navigate to the home screen, highlight the game that's currently inserted, and press X on the controller to eject the disc. Note that if this method works but the eject button doesn't it might just be faulty button hardware on the console.

If neither of those options worked, you can try the manual approach. Luckily, all Xbox One consoles (excluding the all-digital version) come equipped with a small pinhole to manually eject a disc. On the original Xbox One, this pinhole is on the left side of the console, just below the grey button.

  • Insert an unfolded paperclip or SIM Eject Bit into the hole and press in to eject the disc.

Causes

1

Make sure that the disc isn't dirty or sticky and does not have a label that will prevent it from ejecting from the console. Try cleaning the disc and reinsert it into the console. If it won't come back out using the eject button or by triggering an eject with the controller, use the paperclip method to get it back out.

2

If there is any dust or debris lodged in the disc drive, it can cause issues with the mechanical components. First try to manually eject the disc as stated in the above section and then attempt to dislodge any debris.

Blow some clean, dry air (either from a compressed air can, or a more environmentally friendly option), into the disc drive slot, blowing along the opening from one side to the other. Try blowing at an angle so that any dust is being forced out from the opening, rather than being driven deeper into the device.

3

If the console frequently does not eject discs properly and you have checked that the discs are clean and should eject properly, then there may be an issue with your disc drive and you can replace the disc drive to solve your problem. Unfortunately, you will need to replace both the Motherboard and the Disk Drive, as the two are paired components.
