My Problem

Purchased the MBP with a small SSD with intentions to implement this configuration

My Fix

Relatively smooth. I would recommend using a Phillips #0 rather than #00

My Advice

Be absolutely certain the SSD you wish to install has a compatible data transfer rate with your machine AND has the most up to date firmware (TRIM enabled)

Went well although design of bluetooth antenna was different than repair plan showed. Succeded anyway

Just look very carefully and then just do it!

My Problem

I installed the Dual Drive for the always-available Time Machine backup. Optical storage really is antiquated.

My Fix

The installation went perfectly, however certain bizarre issues resulted. My MacBook Pro seemed to no longer go to sleep, preferring instead to shut itself down, then complain to me upon boot that this had happened. Additionally, Bluetooth would inconsistently report itself unavailable. After some light reading, I reset the SMC, PRAM, reinstalled Mavericks 10.9.2 and recovered my setup via Time Machine, and reflected seriously on whether or not I needed Bluetooth or suspend mode for my laptop.

The solution (so far, anyway) seems to be to shutdown the computer, disconnect the SATA connector to the Dual Drive, reboot, suspend, reconnect the SATA, then restart. That solved the problem for me.

My Advice

I have no way of knowing what the cause of this issue was and I may never know. At first I thought it might be related to the amp draw via SATA possibly sharing a power bus with Bluetooth. Now I think it may have been Mavericks confused by how a SuperDrive miraculously became a hard disk. I believe the problem is resolved.

My Problem

Needed more storage for Linux! I fixed the problem with a 1TB Western Digital Blue drive for laptops.

Smoothly! It was a lot of fun getting into the guts of my old MacBook Pro and customizing my old machine!

My Advice

That little piece of plastic holding the iSight camera in place is a doozy! Just handle it all gingerly and always use a spudger!

I produced my own magnetic mat using a couple of magnetic sheets I purchased in a paper store and printed an A4 sheet with a grid on my computer - DONE.
