8BitDo Ultimate Wireless Unresponsive Joysticks or Buttons
- When using the 8BitDo Ultimate Gamepad, the face buttons and directional pad are partially or entirely unresponsive or Joysticks are Unresponsive/Drifting. Follow these instructions to get them working again.
Controller not Properly Connected
- Check to make sure the controller is properly connected to your device. The 8BitDo Ultimate Wireless controller supports both Bluetooth and 2.4G wireless connections. As such being in the wrong mode or losing a pairing can cause all inputs to stop working. Check the switch on the back of the controller and make sure it is set to the correct mode for your platform. Bluetooth for Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, and 2.4G for Windows PC.
- 2.4G connection (Windows PC): Make sure the 2.4G receiver is firmly connected, whether by plugging it into the dock and connecting the dock via USB to your PC or plugging the receiver directly into your PC. If Inputs are still not registering, press the home button and wait till the controller is successfully recognized by your PC.
- Bluetooth connection (Switch/Steam Deck): If the controller is not being recognized, hold the pair button for 3 seconds to enter its pairing mode. The status LED will start to blink rapidly. Then navigate to your device’s bluetooth settings and select the controller from the list of available devices. The LED should turn solid once connection is established.
Joysticks/Buttons not Calibrated
- Re-calibrate the joysticks by pressing and holding LB + RB + MInus + Plus for 8 seconds while the controller is powered on. The status LED will begin blinking rapidly to indicate calibration mode. Now, push the joysticks to the edge and rotate them slowly 2-3 times, then slowly press the triggers and let them go slowly 2-3 times. Finally, complete the calibration by pressing the same LB + RB + Minus + Plus to save the settings and get out of calibration mode. As a bonus, if you have access to a PC, download a gamepad input tester to determine whether stick drift or faulty input is the fault of your controller or console.
Firmware Not Updated
- 8BitDo periodically releases firmware updates that fix input issues. Past updates specifically addressed instances where buttons did not respond despite the controller being connected. Having an outdated firmware thus can cause lack of response from your joystick/buttons. You can download the latest firmware and update your controller through the 8BitDo Firmware Updater tool, available on their official support page. It can automatically detect and download the necessary updates when connected to the internet.
Faulty Joystick or Button Hardware
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, the internal joystick module or button contacts may be physically damaged or worn out. This will require opening the controller and inspecting the affected components for visible damage. Replacement parts and repair can help you walk through the process, check iFixit for available guides.
