If your Xbox One is having trouble initiating or sustaining an internet connection, use the following solutions to get back online.

Causes

1

If the console does not connect to the internet then your router may be the problem. Follow the factory directions to reset or power cycle your router. A general method of resetting a router is to:

1. Shut down your devices.

2. Turn off the modem, then the router and unplug the power cables.

3. Wait for 30 seconds.

4. Plug the power cords back in but do not turn them on.

5. Turn on your modem and wait for the lights to stabilize.

6. Switch on the router and wait for the lights to stabilize.

7. Turn your devices back on and check for internet connection.

2

Your device may not be connecting due to a poor connection. This may be caused by poor internet quality in general, but there's not much we can do about that. If you're trying to connect during a "rush hour" when everyone in your area is also demanding data from the network, your own connection can slow significantly. Additionally, if you've used a significant amount of data already in the month, some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) will "throttle" your connection, slowing it down artificially to punish you using too much data.

If your device isn't connecting at certain times of day or near the end of the month, but the issue is intermittent, try googling 'internet speed test' from another device connected to your internet. If the connection is slow enough that this is your problem, the only solutions are to pay your ISP for more bandwidth, change your ISP (if that's even an option), or stick to single player games until your connection improves.

Sometimes the Xbox gets hung up while trying to connect to your router. Luckily, a restart will force it to abandon any frozen processes. If the Xbox still does not connect to the internet, you should do a hard reset:

1. While the Xbox is on, press and hold the power button for five seconds and the console will power down.

2. Wait 30 seconds then press the power button to turn the device back on.

3. Try to reconnect to the internet.

If the Xbox still does not connect to the internet, you may have a bad wifi board and you may need to replace the Wi-Fi board.
