Apple's original Smartwatch was announced in 2014. The Series 1 (similar to and taking the place of the original Apple Watch) and Series 2 Apple Watches followed in 2016. Early models used a wireless connection to an iPhone to perform functions such as calling and texting, but could connect directly to a Wi-Fi network for some tasks. Some Apple Watch models in Series 3 and later equipped with LTE capabilities can independently connect to a mobile network.
