Causes
A clogged filter in a Dyson vacuum can create a muffled sucking sound or a high-pitched squealing during use. You may need to remove and clean out the vacuum filter. Remove the filter by twisting the purple dial labeled “filter” located at the top of the vacuum. Pull the filter out of the vacuum and rinse it under running water for at least two minutes, or until the water runs clear. While rinsing the filter, gently shake it to remove any built-up debris. Gently wring out the filter to remove excess water. Place the filter in a dry, warm environment and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours, or until the filter is completely dry. Then, place the filter back into the vacuum and try to use it normally.
If the filter is too dirty to clean, it may need to be replaced. See the Dyson DC58 Filter Replacement Guide to replace the vacuum filter.

If your vacuum makes a popping noise along with a pungent burning smell, a motor failure may be the cause. This will involve replacing the main body of the vacuum, which contains the motor. Use this Dyson DC58 Main Body Replacement Guide to replace the vacuum’s motor.
