  1. Power cycle your console. When dealing with any issues with your electronics, the first step will always be to turn your device off and back on. You can also unplug the power cord from the console for 60 seconds and reconnect the cable.
  2. Make sure that your display's output is correct. Check your TV or monitor settings to ensure they are configured correctly for the PS5. Make sure the input source is set to the correct HDMI port.
  3. Check your physical HDMI connection. Ensure the HDMI cable connecting your PS5 to the display is securely plugged in. Try using a different HDMI cable or port to rule out cable or port issues.

Sometimes, it could be an issue with the display you are using with your PlayStation 5 console and not an actual issue with the console itself.

  • Test with a different display. Connect your PS5 to a different TV or monitor to see if the issue persists. This helps determine the problem with the console or the display device.
  • Turn off your display's HDR settings. Some PlayStation 5 owners have reported that they could regain use of their console from the Green Screen of Death by disabling the High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature on their display. Disabling your display's HDR will be specific to the brand of display that you use.
  • Try using a different HDMI port. Sometimes, the HDMI port your PlayStation 5 uses can cause this issue. According to Sony, it is recommended that you use an HDMI 2.1 connection or an HDMI 1.4 connection if your display does not have one.

The PS5 features a Rest Mode, allowing the console to power quickly. This model has been known to cause some issues with the console displaying a green screen.

  • Turn off your PS5's Rest Mode by going into Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode. Then select Don’t Put in Rest Mode.

In addition to disabling this setting, you should attempt to update your console's operating system. Ensuring that your PlayStation 5 is running the latest system software version that can resolve software issues with your console. If you can access your console's interface, follow the steps below to update your console.

If your console is not booting into the console's interface due to the green screen, try updating the console through safe mode.

  1. Turn off your PS5 console.
  2. Using a PC or Mac, create a folder named PS5 on a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Inside that folder, create another folder named UPDATE.
  3. Download the PS5 console update file and save it in the UPDATE folder. Save the file as PS5UPDATE.PUP. (There must be approximately 1,1GB of free space.)
  4. Plug the USB drive containing the update file into your PS5 console.
  5. Start your PS5 console in Safe Mode by pressing the power button and releasing it after the second beep.
  6. Select Update System Software.
  7. Select Update from USB Storage Device > OK.

Reinstalling your console's system software deletes all data on your console. Selecting this option should be the last step when troubleshooting. Be sure to back up your save game data before proceding.

  1. Using a PC or Mac, create a folder named PS5 on a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Inside that folder, create another folder named UPDATE.
  2. Download the reinstallation file and save it in the UPDATE folder. Save the file as "PS5UPDATE.PUP".
  3. Plug the USB drive containing the file into the PS5 console.
  4. Start the PS5 console in Safe Mode
    1. Press and hold the power button.
    2. Releasing after the second beep.
  5. Select Initialize PS5 (Reinstall System Software).

If your PlayStation 5 shows a green screen on your display, and you've ruled out the above issues, the HDMI port or motherboard may be damaged.

  • Carefully inspect your system's HDMI port. Look for any visible damage (bent or broken pins, debris, or signs of wear). If you notice any issues, it could impact the connection with your TV or monitor.
  • Check for other signs of physical damage. Examine the PlayStation 5's logic board for any signs of physical damage. Look for cracks, burns, or other issues that may indicate damage to the motherboard. If present, micro-soldering may be required.

If the HDMI port on the PS5 is not functioning then you may need to replace the motherboard with a new one that fits your version of the PS5.
