PlayStation 4 Controller Touchpad Not Working

Ensure the game/app is compatible with the touchpad. Although it is a significant addition to the PlayStation 4's controller, the touchpad cannot be used in every area that the PlayStation 4 offers—only games incorporating the touchpad into their software work with the touchpad. So be sure the touchpad is usable with the game or application you are attempting to use.
Power Cycle the Controller and Console: Restarting the console and controller can resolve issues with the controller firmware and any issues with the PlayStation's software.
Make sure your controller is clean. Dirt or other debris could be interfering with your controller's touchpad. Please turn off your controller and clean it with a microfiber cloth dampened with 90% isopropyl alcohol.
Look for any indication of physical damage. If your controller was dropped or potentially thrown at something, check your controller's external casing for any indication of damage. This could indicate if there is any internal damage to your controller.

In most instances where your controller is experiencing issues, updating your controller firmware can also resolve many issues.

Connect the controller to the PS4 using a USB cable.
Go to Settings > Devices > Controllers > Update System Software.
If there is an update available, then you should update. This will resolve temporary issues with your controller's software and help your controller with issues turning on.

If your controller has the latest firmware and is still experiencing an issue, attempt to re-sync your controller with your PlayStation 4 console.

Turn off your PlayStation 4.
Unplug the controller and flip it over.
While it is upside down, locate the recessed reset button in the small hole near the controller's L2 button, and use your paper clip or similar tool to press and hold it for at least 6 seconds.
Release the reset button and wait a few more seconds. Then, plug in the controller using a 2.0 micro-USB cable.
Press the PS button on the front of your controller. When the light bar on the controller turns blue, it should be paired, and you can log on to your PS4.

If you cannot resolve the issue by updating your controller's firmware, the issue might be with your controller's physical hardware.

If you recently had to remove your controller, you should ensure all the connections are correctly seated. Specifically the connection between the touchpad and the motherboard.
While disassembling your controller, check your controller's motherboard for any signs of burns or damage that might affect the controller's ability to function correctly.
