The first generation iPad was praised for having numerous capabilities and offering a usable device that offered more portability than a laptop. On the other hand, the iPad was criticized by some reviewers for having a closed-off operating system and limited support for Adobe Flash multimedia.

The first generation iPad is a thin, rectangular tablet. It features a touchscreen housed in an encasing. There is a home button and physical controls on the side of the device.
