I got this a while ago, after some research I found that with quite a few people the hard drive head had simple got "stuck".

I banged it against a table on the side of the iPod rather than the back or front then pressed the central button to boot it up, and it worked!

It's happened a few times since but each time i just wack it against my other hand and all is fixed.

The best way of diagnosing this fault it to hold it up to your ear, if it sounds like the hard drive is trying to spin up then failing quickly by clicking spinning down and stopping, making this sound repeatedly and frequently then it's probably this issue.

This saved me from replacing the hard drive in it, my fault it broke anyway as i dropped the iPod onto a tiled floor.

Unbelievable, one medium strength bang on the right hand side of the ipod and it instantley came back alive. I feel like the Fonz.

In short, try a restore first. See if it works.

Logic board is fried ?. Not in my experience. On iPods with a hard drive this usually means the hard drive is knackered. I haven't seen it on flash based iPods.

This happens every now and then on my 4th gen iPod photo. I just open up the case and power it up again. Normally boots fine after this so I put it back together.

Before banging the drive, I would propose reseating the hard drive and its connector cable - just unplug and replug. I have been able to rescue iPods this way with nothing but a guitar pick. It's not necessarily a permanent fix, but it will get your iPod up and running for a while at least.

When a Sad face with an online support website comes on it means that your iPod logic board is fried and it cannot be used any more which means that you have to replace the logic board or go and buy another iPod
