How do I know what is damaged after the water damage?

How will I know what is in fact damaged after the initial incident?

By opening the box

and looking for liquid or residue. Remember to check the underside of the logic board. Search liquid spill or liquid damage and look at Answers for steps to cleaning and repairing.

DO NOT POWER UP THE UNIT by either battery or charger until it's clean(especially if you've spilled soda, beer or tea) and dried for a least 72hrs in a desiccant.

First thing you should do is not power it up and IMMEDIATELY remove the power supply, so in the case of a laptop, yank the battery out first thing. Before you even start wiping liquid off or anything.

Open it up and see where the water went. There are white indicator dots located all over that turn red when they get wet. Look for those. They are called (LCI) liquid contact indicators. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3425
