Oster 3905 Troubleshooting
Debuting in 2008, the Oster 3905 is a 4-slice toaster with a retractable cord.
- Toaster Emits a Bad Smell
- Toasting Lever Does Not Stay Down
- Cord Does Not Retract on its Own
- Knobs and/or Levers are Sticky
- Toaster is Unstable
- Temperature Knobs Fall Off
- Toasting Levers Fall Off

The toaster has a bad smell whenever it is in use.
Before cleaning and removing the crumb catcher, first make sure the toaster is unplugged and cool to the touch. Once it is cool, wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth and lightly tap to remove any crumbs within the slots. Then remove the crumb catchers at the bottom of each pair of slots, there should be two. Wipe down the crumb catchers with a damp cloth. After drying off each catcher, replace into their slots.
After cleaning the toaster, if there is still an unpleasant smell, the toaster may have faulty or broken wires. Turn on the toaster and while empty, check the interior and see if the wires are heated throughout and not worn. When you push the lever down to toast, it doesn’t stay down.
Check the cord of the toaster and see if it is plugged into a working outlet. If it is, please see this guide on lever spring replacement.
When putting away your toaster, the cord does not self-retract.
Completely pull out the cord and make sure that it is not twisted in any areas. Once untwisted, lightly tug on the cord and it should self-retract. If it does not self-retract, please see this guide on replacing the retractable cord.
When using your toaster, you notice a sticky residue on your hand.
If only a small part of the knobs or levers are sticky, use a damp cloth to wipe down the areas. Do not use any abrasive chemicals or sharp objects, as this will damage the toaster. When using your toaster, it wobbles.
Tilt the front of your toaster up, so you can see the two front feet. Check for a grey rubber foot on both sides. Check to see if one of the rubber feet is missing.
Lift your toaster and check for the cord. When you place your toaster back on the counter, make sure that it does not rest on the cord and that the cord is retracted.
When adjusting your temperature knobs, they fall off or wiggle.
Support the back of your toaster and firmly press on the temperature knobs. If the knobs click, they should be in place and shouldn’t fall off or wiggle. If they do not click into place and continue to fall off and wiggle, please see this guide on replacing temperature knobs.
When pushing levers down to toast, they fall off or wiggle.
Support the back of your toaster and firmly press into the slot levers. If the levers click, they should be in place and shouldn’t fall off or wiggle. If they do not click into place and continue to fall off and wiggle, please see this guide on replacing slot levers.
Check the bottom of your slot levers and make sure that the bottoms are still screwed on. If they are not screwed on, use a screwdriver to tighten them into place. If they are screwed on and continue to fall off and wiggle, please see this guide on replacing slot levers.
The final product is not toasted at the same level as the selected temperature
Turn the temperature knob clockwise until it stops. Remove the temperature knob and snap back into place with the temperature meter pointing at the highest temperature. If you are having trouble removing or replacing the temperature knobs, please see this guide on replacing temperature knobs.

When trying to toast, the toaster does not respond accordingly.
Find the cord, at the back-right corner. If it is not plugged into an outlet, plug it in.
Check the inside of the toaster slots for a toasting product. If you see a toasting product, your toaster’s anti-jam protection has been activated. This causes your toaster to automatically shut off.
