Flydigi Apex 5 Not Charging
Consult this page if your Flydigi Apex 5 is unable to charge via USB-C or the Flydigi Pro 2 Dock.
Defective Charging Cable
When the device is properly charging, a battery icon will appear on the display below the home button, and the LED strip will brighten on the bottom edge of the controller face.
- One reason for the controller to not present with its regular behavior is a faulty USB-C cable.
- Try sourcing and testing multiple cables and ensure the issue persists before proceeding.
USB-C cable quality varies frequently, USB standards are not followed for every cable, and companies can source their cables from different OEMs that have different standards for durability. It is very common for cables to die sooner than expected, even with little wear or tear.
Defective Charging Port
The charging port can be shipped broken if there was an issue with a soldered point or circuit board inside the controller. The port can also break due to daily use from buildup of water or dust.
Find a USB-C cable and test it with a different device to ensure you have a cable you know works, then try connecting it to the controller. If the controller still doesn’t charge, then the problem is likely due to the USB-C port.
You can take some steps to see if the charging port is broken without opening the controller.
- Check the charging port for debris or scratched pins with a flashlight.
- Check if the port feels loose in its socket.
You can try fixing the charging port from the outside by cleaning out lint or debris from the port with a toothpick or compressed air.
If the controller still won’t charge via USB-C after cleaning, then the issue could reside inside the controller. Refer to the Flydigi Apex 5 USB-C Daughterboard Replacement guide for further replacement details.
Defective Charging Dock
The Apex 5 controller is designed to work with the Flydigi Dock 2 Pro. If the controller is not charging via the dock, the dock may be defective. To verify if this is the case, try the following:
- Plug in the dock into a PC’s USB port or a wall charging brick. The dock’s front LEDs should illuminate.
- If the dock is receiving power, set the controller onto the dock. The charging indicator should appear on the controller’s display under the home button. The LED strip on the bottom edge of the controller face should also illuminate. If it does not, try cleaning the contacts on the back of the controller using a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, then try placing the controller back onto the dock.
- Leave the controller to charge for 3-4 hours. Remove the controller and turn it on to check its charge via the power switch on the back of the controller.
If the controller still does not charge via the dock but will charge via USB-C, either the controller's daughter board for the dock charging functionality or the dock itself is damaged. To replace the controller’s daughterboard, follow the Flydigi Apex 5 Back Paddle Daughterboard Replacement guide.
Dead Battery Pack
If the controller will not charge with either the charging dock or the USB port, it is likely because of a failing battery. To replace the battery, refer to the Flydigi Apex 5 Battery Replacement guide.
