My Problem
A friend gave me his broken iPhone5 when he upgraded to a 6. (good friend!)
My Fix
Well the basic replacement of the screen is very easy. I have the tools from iFixit and followed the guide. The only problem I had were grey blocks at the top of the screen, then the display would act weird.
A quick search found that if I cleaned the contacts that should solve things. So I disassembled again, and busted out the magnifying glass. Sure enough, the new screen, (purchased from iFixit) had some grunge on the connecter. I used some contact cleaner and a small plastic pick to remove the detritus from the connection and VOILA! Satisfaction!
Now I'm on the hunt for another phone to pass off to my wife. iFixit makes repairing these things a breeze.
My Advice
Go slow, and use some sticky tape to keep track of the screws. Buy good tools, the cheap stuff strips screws. I replaced the pentalobe screws when re-assembling.
Also, work clean. give yourself some space and some light and don't force anything.
