As a whole, the iPad lineup has never been easy to repair. Since the second generation, all iPads have been sealed shut with copious amounts of glue, deterring many would-be repairs. Previously, the only way to open an iPad was to blast the perimeter of the tablet with a heat gun to melt the adhesive. While this method will indeed open an iPad, it is very difficult. Add that to the possible side effects of warping the LCD, melting exposed plastic components—such as the home button—and burning your fingers, and you have a recipe for a headache.

At iFixit, our goal is to make repair as easy as possible. We saw that the necessity for a heat gun was deterring many DIY enthusiasts from repairing iPads, so we searched long and hard for a better solution. We needed something that would make the repair not only easier, but faster, safer, and more convenient as well. We found the solution to our iPad opening problem in the iOpener.

The iOpener was designed to apply the same heat as a wily heat gun, but in a much easier, safer, and more sustainable way. By using a material with a high heat capacity, the iOpener can easily transfer heat from one place to another. The iOpener is heated in a microwave, and then laid across the surface of the iPad, applying heat only where it is necessary. In this way, the iOpener has a huge advantage over the heat gun method.

Stories

My Problem

The battery had developed bad cells and wouldn't hold a charge for more than a minute or so. The iPad mini was otherwise intact so it made sense to try and replace the battery.

My Fix

There was a time after removing the LCD that the instructions weren't super clear about separating the LCD from some tape (but that could just be my special brain) but it otherwise went without a hitch.

My Advice

Take your time, don't get frustrated, and don't force things and you'll do fine =]

My Problem

The whole top of my screen was broken off, and after a while the cable controlling touch snapped. so after months of disuse i decided to fix it myself after going to a apple technical and them telling me it would be $200

My Fix

It was difficult but after an hour i had fixed it, i could not be more happy.

My Advice

make sure to repair any dented corners before placing the screen, or it will not fit in the housing

My Problem

Cracked digitizer

My Fix

Perfectly, took roughly 1 hour

My Advice

Always read through the entire guide before starting the repair.

My Problem

iPhone 5 screen broken completely

My Fix

The steps provided by fixit.com is enough to do. Before going to do repair, please watch the video and follow the steps, only hurdle I faced is re-assemble, especially to attach display assembly ports, screw for ports (3 screws!) took me little more time, because its delicate and my screw driver is not working the way to release the screws in the appropriate place to put back the screws ! Finally done successfully.

One note, you don't need to disconnect battery, Just turn power off your phone... that's enough and buy/get all necessary tools for this

otherwise it's very difficult to do.

Now it's working perfectly, First time right!.

I took photo after the replacement of screen!...

My Advice

buy a complete set of

iPhone 5 Display Assembly (LCD, Front Panel/Digitizer Only) always from trusted source. Don't buy cheap and it

with iOpener and Magnetic Project Mat will greatly help you to re-assemble quickly!

Carefully remove the broken glass it may hurt you and dispose safely.

My Problem

The docking connector was damaged and not able to charge the iPad.

My Fix

The repair took a LOT longer than expected. The iopener heating device was marginal - I had to use a hair dryer in conjunction with the iopener heating device to loosen the adhesive. The plastic opener tools supplied in the kit did NOT work. I could not get either tool in between the metal case and the glass. The edges of both plastic opening tools blunted over at the ends when trying to insert them - I could not get either to work. I had to use a fine bladed paring knife to make the first entry. After that I was able to get the triangular opening picks in and continued with the opening with heat and rolling the triangular opening pics (which worked great. I successfully replaced the docking connector using the supplied screw divers which worked great - it was very helpful having the screw drivers magnetic which helped remove and insert the small screws. I then removed the old adhesive and reassembly the unit less the top glass. Then added the new adhesive strips with great difficulty - I should have put in the adhesive strip while the iPad was disassembled. I finally installed the glass cover and powered/checked the unit out - success!

My Advice

The plastic opening tools should be made with a harder material. The heating device was difficult to use because it was round - at least one flat surface on the device would made for better placement and stay put. The heating device did not supply enough heat to readily melt the adhesive. Also an instruction/notice to add the new adhesive strips while the unit is disassembled would be very helpful to make their placement easier. I had a hard time finding the right place to lift the locking tabs on the ribbon cables. I would suggest better instructions/illustrations of how/where to lift the small locking tabs on the ribbon cable connectors.

My Problem

I had an iPad that some careless dumdum (myself) pretty much completely shattered the front panel on. So the panel needed to be replaced.

My Fix

The iOpener worked wonderfully until I got to the really shattered part of the panel removal. At that point a heat gun and some elbow grease was required but I got the panel off. In the process however accidently cut the wifi antenna (that I was explicitly warned about lol). I ordered the replacement and once it arrives I can finish up the repair. Otherwise so far so good. iFixit, You guys are awesome.

My Advice

The iOpener works really well but if the glass of the device is badly shattered it can be a little intrusive in a constant heat and scrape kind of operation. Also pay extra close attention when opening the bottom of the device, they aren't kidding when they say the antenna is delicate. And in a case with a bad shatter where elbow grease is required you should probably just order the antenna piece with the display since damaging it when removing serious glass shatter is almost inevitable.

My Problem

The battery was dying quickly, not holding a charge and then the phone was dropped from a roller-coaster, they found it but the fall had shattered the screen.

My Fix

Using the tool kit we ordered and step by step instructions, the phone has been returned to near perfect condition! Thank you!

My Advice

Its a tedious fix, but using the tool that came with the ifixit kit and some patience, following the step by step instructions-anything can be repaired!

My Problem

The digitizer was cracked and I was repairing it for a customer.

My Fix

The repair went well, I'm a computer Tech and I would always use a hot air gun. I decided to purchase the iopener. It works great, it took a little longer to do the repair but you don't have to risk damaging anything to get the digitizer off.

My Advice

Just be patient the iopener will help, it just takes time.

My Problem

Voltage issue with USB port on PC made USB data pin on phone to stop working but charged just fine. Not a problem with wireless adb but while flashing new rom, I mistakenly deleted everything on the phone including the rom zip. I tried everything to get the rom zip on the phone from usb-otb to different cables to battery drains but nothing worked.

My Fix

Having given up, I got a cheap phone. While m7 sat in the closet. Recently, I was cleaning my room and spotted my m7 abandoned it didn't feel right. Decided to get a new m7 usb port and replace the faulty part. Hardest part was taking out the back cover off m7. Replaced the usb and it worked! Finally back from dead.

My Advice

Turns out m7 is really hard to get the back off without damaging the cover so I got $11 back cover replacement. Youtube video on replacing just the usb without removing all the other parts with help of tweezers helped lots. Shipping to Canada is a strange paradox, I want product to arrive fast however if I pay over ~$30USD (~$40CAD) for 2 day fedex shipping, I get charged extra $15CAD by fedex for faster customs passage. And regular delivery takes minimum 1 month and costs ~$15USD (~$20CAD). ifixit needs to update shipping speed and costs to Canada. And oh I got rid of the faulty usb ports on the PC as well, took less than 3 minutes and a Phillips screwdriver.

My Problem

I cracked my iPad air screen

My Fix

Removal using the ifixit opener and kit with the magnetic tools and picks for opening went extremely easy,

My Advice

Have a little patience and keep reheating the adhesive
