This is sort of a "known issue" - aside from battery swelling I have experienced this when the battery had been cracked.

Someone squeezed something on top of my Macbook Air while it was in a laptop bag in an overhead airline bin. Sometimes I would get the black X in the menu bar and it might run, or it might shut right off, but on a restart or after shutting down for a while it would go away.

Finally, after opening the machine, I found a corner of the battery was cracked. I supposed that moving it (flexing the case) while taking it out or putting it away would cause the issue to appear or disappear.
