Best way to clean dust from fans etc

I just replaced the RAM in my MBP and was a little surprised to see how much dust had accumulated around the fans in a year and a half. I see a lot of threads here saying "clean out the dust" but what is the safest and most effective procedure for this? What substances, angle of attack, etc? Sorry if it's somewhere I've missed.

Disconnect magsafe AC adapter, remove the MBP bottom panel, disconnect the internal battery from the logic board, use a can of compressed air to blow off the dust out of the fan(s) and internal components. When doing this hold the fan blades with one finger to avoid fan spinning around. If there's still dust on the fan blades you can use Q-tips with isopropyl alcohol to clean them.
