I think my 2010 15" MBP logic board is fried

I pulled my laptop out of my backpack a few weeks back and it would not power up. It’s a mid 2010 15” Unibody i7 2.66 GHz with 8GB RAM and two SSDs (1.5TB total).

When I press the power button:

  • I don’t hear fan spin up
  • The screen backlight does not turn on.
  • There is no boot chime
  • The status indicator light on the front of the top cover does, in fact, turn on.
  • Magsafe turns green and then amber when battery is connected. When the battery is disconnected it is only green.

With the case open, I have been able to get the fans to spin by disconnecting the battery and first pressing the power button, then plugging the magsafe in. I don’t think I’ve been able to reset the PRAM and SMC successfully as it doesn’t seem to get past post. Also, I hooked the laptop.

I’m not a logic board repair person by any means, but I’m thinking maybe the thermal paste on the GPU and CPU needed replacement and those components may have overheated. I noticed the laptop got pretty warm before this failure happened.

Any and all help is appreciated.

After looking up some more solutions on the web I ended up baking the logic board in the oven and that fixed it. I think it was the GPU and it needed a reflow. It was down for weeks and I’m typing this message on it now. Thank you very much for the help.

Go for a spontaneous restart. Disconnect the mag-safe then the battery from the logic board. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Reconnect the battery then the mag-Safe. It should restart on its own.
