Screen shows blue instead of black pixels; external display is normal

My 15” 2010 MBPro screen suddenly looks very strange. It has a blue tint, in fact I ran a color pattern test and everything that should show up as black shows up as blue. Red looks very similar to magenta. But my external screen hooked up to mini-display port looks perfectly normal, black patterns show up perfectly as do all other colors. Tilting the display back and forth has no affect either.

Is there any way to tell if this problem is due to wiring, LCD panel, or backlight problem?

NOTE: I’ve installed gfxCardStatus, and switching between integrated & discrete graphics makes no difference. Also, I have iStat Menus installed, and “Left Heat Pipe/Fin Pipe Proximity” just shows a dash, no temps. No idea if that was always the case, just noticed it now trying to troubleshoot this screen problem.

You’ll need to inspect the LVDS connector on the logic board as well as the LVDS cable for damage. Follow this IFIXIT guide MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2010 Display Replacement Follow the Steps to Step5 then jump down to Step15 and Step16 so you can inspect the cable and the cable contacts. Take a clear image of the connectors both the cable and the board so we can check them out and post the images here so we can see them Adding images to an existing question

Thanks Dan! I was hoping to inspect LVDS connectors/cables today but work was relentless. I dont think I’ll have a chance to do that until I get back from holiday travels in January.

However - I just noticed that the text on this page is BLACK instead of blue and all colors look normal! Im pretty sure that earlier today it was still wonky with all blacks being replaced by blue and red showing as magenta. I havent shut down the laptop for a couple days, only close the lid when I leave work and open it again when I get home, as I did a few minutes ago.

Maybe this will last but I have a feeling its a fragile situation and next time I open the lid the problem could reappear. I will continue to update this thread if any changes appear.

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on start up and let us know if the problem persists. This will tell us if this is a hardware or software problem.
