Can I replace my optical drive with a fan or other cooling?

I haven't used my optical drive in years and wanted to improve the cooling in my laptop. It's frequently getting very hot. I've already replaced the HDD with an SSD as well as increased the ram to 8GB.

Thanks for any help!

I'd first pull both the fans, blow them out and clean the vents and see if that helps. When working on it look for residue on the logic board that looks like oil. If you find it, the heat sink may have developed a leak and lost the internal cooling liquid and need to be replaced.
