iPad USB Cord Problem

I can not get my iPad to recognize its USB cord. I tried resetting the iPad in settings and it now wants me to connect it to the computer with the USB cord. I am stuck. It will not connect with the cord. It is a brand new cord. I plugged the new cord into the computer and then to the iPad and nothing happens! I am now stuck with a reset iPad asking me to connect the cord! I can't go any further! Help!
