Stuck at step 40 in Display Assembly Replacement

Hi all,

My iPhone 4s has a shattered screen so I ordered replacement part from Amazon. It arrived and I started following the steps here for replacing the LCD assembly. I got all the way down to installing the new LCD assembly when I got stuck.

iPhone 4S Screen Replacement

At step #40 / 41, the instructions tell me to make sure the new display's cables are pulled through far enough to be reconnected. The step says, "Carefully straighten the digitizer and LCD data cables, and feed them through the slot cut in the outer case.".

I am doing that, but it's not going through as far as the "correct" picture shows. It appears one of the cables is glued down to the back surface of the face plate, so it won't be as long as I need it.

I'm not sure how to proceed without ripping the cable. I feel like I'm trying to do something I shouldn't. Is this normal? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Actually the picture is a little bit misleading. All you have to do is to make sure the touch panel cable was not caught somewhere, so if the touch panel cable is as long as the display data cable, you're fine.

Do not pull the display data cable this far as shown in the picture, you actually risk damaging the cable by the folding point.

"make sure the touch panel cable is not caught somewhere"

That's my problem. The first 2 CM or so are glued down to the back of the fact plate. That's why it's about 2 CM shorter than the other cable. I have not yet begun the re-assembly because of this so it's as loose as it will get, even though I've not stuck it through the hole in the case yet.

Alright, from what you and Brad are saying, I think I have a defective part here. I am going to see if the seller will send me another one, after they confirm that all of their displays are not glued this same way.

Correct me if anything I've said above is wrong still, but otherwise, thanks for the advice.

The two flex cables are exactly the same length when the front screen is installed correctly. The #41 photo shows the digitizer cable being a mm shorter, but they are really the exact same length. (this is camera angle or they are just not pushed exactly together for the photo) If the digitizer cable appears shorter it is trapped behind the screen, which is very bad, as it is very fragile. You need to be certain they are the same length as you put the screen into place, otherwise the digitizer cable will get pinched. If it is already trapped unscrew and loosen screen to free it. Do not tug on either flex they are fragile. Then install it correctly and hope it is not damaged. Good luck.
