Dish soap and water damage

My 2 year-old's bubble solution (basically dishsoap and water) spilled on my iphone 3gs this morning while playing. The on/off and home buttons were functional but the screen was non-responsive. I disassembled the phone almost completely, saw no visible/obvious damage, and put an air current on everything to dry it out.

I've heard of using a bag of rice... do i have to reassmble the phone or can i put all the components in there individually? Guess im worried about getting too much dust or tiny broken pieces of rice into the inside of the phone. Also, how long should it be left in the rice before putting back together to test?

Thanks!

You should be able to put it in rice either in pieces, or as an assembled unit. It shouldn't matter, since the rice really just absorbs the moisture from the device over time. It doesn't leave any residue or any type of dust/debris, but if there is a little bit of broken-up rice in it, it won't effect it since rice doesn't conduct electricity. I would leave it in rice for a week or so, then you can take it out, and try it.

I had the same issue with my Iphone 3G, I didn't do anything with it for a week, then I opened it and I left it for 3 hours behind of my laptop (where the warm air flows). When I reassembled, it turned on and worked perfectly. The screen has a little mark but I can lead with it. Take care with the little ribbon cable 3, I damaged it the first time I disassembed it and I still unable to fix it (it makes the earpiece work).
