i fix these phones all the time and that is not correct about the screen. The HTC desire 510 has a small amount of adhesive tape not glue on the out er edge of the glass that holds it to the plastic bezel. The "best" way to deal with this is to us a thin pry tool or razor blade(be careful with them) and a heat gun or blow dryer. heat the screen around the edges of the phone and use your tool to get between the glass and the plastic. the heat will cause the adhesive to loosen up and then you can pry it up. I normally pry it up just enough to slide a playing card between the glass and the the plasstic and then slide the playing card down to undo the rest of the screen. Also you need to undo the logic board from the phone and pry the screen up form the top of the phone. the flex ribbon for the glass wraps under the lcd and the lcd has adhesive under it holding the lcd to the phone. so you have to heat the back of the phone with the battery and logic board out to get the lcd out and properly put a new glass in.hmmm... sounds a bit complicated so i might make a guide to show you.

What is the tiny piece of metal mesh off to the side of the ribbons connection? And do I need to replace it?

I hate to be that guy, but the Glass is glued directly to the screen. You are better off replacing the screen and glass at the same time. It is possible to heat the glue and remove the glass from the screen, but the odds of breaking the display are really high.

mbrady, that is not correct. The glass is actually not entirely glued to the screen. it is simply glued along the perimeter only. The glass digitizer has a layer of clear plastic sheet in its outermost layer that is directly above the LCD screen. The trick is to gently poke the glass digitzer at the edges. As you do so, you will notice the glass digitizer creating an air space between it and the screen. If you are able to carefully tear in only one section, preferably the corner of the clear plastic sheet, then you can create a handle, which you can pinch-hold to peel off the glass digitizer. Incidentally, if your glass digitizer is cracked in to umpteen glued fragmented, it actually makes it easy to peel off the rest of the glass digitizer cleanly.

This is an instruction prepped from experience, I did it exactly that way. Now if only HTC would have a clear opening for the glass digitizer interface cable so that i can insert it through to connect it to the logicboard. The reset is cakewalk.

Good luck.

Easy fix. Buy a heat gun electricians use (Milwaukee) makes a good one. Buy at any electric supply or possibly home depot. Takes 4-5 seconds along outer edge of glass and it comes off easy. Hard part is putting digitizer cable back thru slot without damage.

You have to use a razor blade place it in between the screen and the phone and it should lift out it's going to take a little bit of force but will pop out..
