This is probably going to be a hardware defect, but we need more details to know if this is solvable or not. I see a lot of iPhone 5 classic battery replacement pry damage--which is board damage to the edge of the board behind the SIM tray from trying to pry out the battery.
This damage results in a loss of function of the home and power buttons, and sometimes it will cause the phone to boot in recovery mode---this can be solved. The damage is easily recognized with a picture of the area behind the SIM tray.
However, there are other cases--damage to the U16 glass baseband ic which is not solvable, and the 'error 16' hardware error where iPhone 5 will not restore the firmware which also is not solvable.
