Is disconnecting the battery necessary?

HI, I replace iPhone screens once in a while and I look at different guides and videos. Some say that I should disconnect the battery before I do anything and some don't mention it. Is it necessary?

And if not, wouldn't it reduce me damaging my phone with static?

I disconnect the battery religiously, however most folks don't for the iPhone 5.

Religiously meaning she does it every single time

do you think it matters?

I go to the Church of Battery, maybe you haven't heard of it?

For the iPhone 5, I don't think it matters. However, it *totally* matters on the mini, so after having fixed a few hundred blown backlight filters on the minis from not disconnecting the battery first, I *always* do it on any device.
