iPhone 5 screen is black but my computer can still see it.

Is my iphone 5 worth fixing? Phone is on and responsive to home and sleep/wake buttons but no display and screen wont respond to touch.

I already tried holding the home and sleep/wake button for 10-30 seconds, restoring phone, and even opened it up to see if the LCD and digitizer cables were just lose. unfortunately nothing has changed. When i hold down the home button i can hear siri beep and the phone plays music when i plug in headphones and press play on the headphone controls and Itunes sees it just fine.I want to know if its worth it to buy a new front LCD for my phone or if it could be something else.

Thank you in advance! I really cant afford a new phone and need it for work.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hey Melissa,

What's the history of the device before this happened? Did it drop? Get wet? or something else? Try calling your phone to see if it rings. If you can, try to use siri to make a call and see if that works as well. If it does and it also shows up on iTunes, its most likely a bad display screen/digitizer, bad lcd or connectors. The parts on iFixit are pretty reasonable and it beats having to get a new phone. I've done the repair numerous times, its a piece of cake if you are at least a bit tech savvy and can follow instructions. iFixit has a GREAT guide here: iPhone 5 LCD and Digitizer Replacement

Otherwise if your phone won't make or receive calls and other things don't work, it could be something else but I can't know for sure without knowing the history of the device prior to/immediately before the problem occurred.

Best of Luck!

Well I dropped my phone almost a year ago and it caused the screen to crack and a small dent in the top right corner, which is why they wouldnt open it up at Apple, since then the right side of the screen slowly stopped responding to touch. I could see the display fine until a week ago when I went to check it after class and the screen was grey. The display came back after clicking the sleep/wake button several times. The following days the screen would occasionally go black but I was able to hear it ring and see the backlight, and was fixable by pressing the home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously. That has since not worked the past two days. I could still hear Siri beep when I hold the home button but she doesnt respond and it still beeps when I connect it to my computer.

Melissa,

I agree with Jessa, that drop definitely damaged your screen and it needs to be replaced. However, as Jessa stated, there could also be other damages caused by the fall. The only way to know is if you could get your hands on a working display, hook it up to yours and see it it works. If it does then you would just need to purchase a display assembly. If not, then there are more damages than just the screen.

It is hard to know if a new screen will help you. I'd say it is 50/50. A bad drop can damage the primary touch ic, which a new screen will not solve. But I'd say that about half the time, maybe more, a new screen will solve.

I would stop in at any repair shop and just ask to borrow one for 2 minutes to rule out digitizer ic damage.

This has happened to me as well I bought a phone with a cracked screen. I replaced the entire display assembly and it works fine for a few days. Now the screen is black. I swapped it with another screen I know is good and did not fix it. I have ordered screens from iphone4parts Siri will function as I'd nothing is wrong. So I assume it's something other than screen but I'm not sure what. I would say the piece the screen plugs into maybe??

Update

Also I can't hard reset in iTunes if I can't set phone to trust computer because the screen doesn't work

Thanks

Probably your replacement screen shorted out the backlight filter. Send out for new backlight filter

I swapped screen assembly's from phone to phone and all assembly's work fine on the good phone

Then your screen definitely shorted the backlight filter. Send it out for repair
