Can the iPhone 4 turn on without the home button ribbon?

a friend of mine tried to do a self repair of the charging port on his iphone and in doing so, he ripped the home button ribbon. I reassembled his phone hoping to turn it back on and do a backup on the phone because I had sold him a brand new 4s. After reassembly, the phone does not turn on. does it need the home button to turn on? Can the Iphone work without the home button till I can backup the phone?

Answer this question I have this problem too

The iPhone will turn ON fine without the home button flex. If the home button flex was installed in the new charging port assembly, I would open iPhone, remove the bottom speaker assembly, and undo the home button connector clamp and remove what is left of the home button flex from the connector. If this does not help, then the new charging port is faulty, or not connected to the logic board correctly, or the battery or its connection to the logic board is faulty.

Well sure--just use the power button at top. When you do, immediately click settings, general, accessibility, and turn on assistive touch. This will give you a white dot on the screen that will serve as a home button.
