Can I clone data from current hd to an external hd?

I currently have the original 120 GB hard drive in my MBP. I will be upgrading to a 500 GB hard drive soon. I keep reading info about cloning all the data from old HD straight to the new HD using an external enclosure. Can't I just clone my old HD to my external Hard Drive, then transfer it to my new hard drive after I install it?

Answer this question I have this problem too

There is a program called SuperDuper for macs that let you copy bit by bit all the data.

Another option is to use Time Machine, and when you install the new HDD, just restore the data.

Yes you can do that, use a program such as SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to clone your data to the external, then install the new drive, boot to the external (hold option at startup) and clone to the new internal.
