At Startup only file with question mark flashes

When I boot up my laptop instead of it going to my user login screen it takes about 2 mins and then a file icon with a question mark starts flashing. I think the hard drive has crashed but I'm not sure. I inserted the Restore Disk's that came with it and when I go to select what volume or start up disk to install on nothing is there.

Any ideas?

The folder with the question mark means it can't find a start up folder. Since you can't see the hard drive with the Restore disk, your hard drive has died. Here's how to replace it: MacBook Core 2 Duo Hard Drive Replacement
