ASUS Chromebook CXB170CKA-BCL64N6 - Keyboard Unresponsive
This ASUS Chromebook keyboard will not respond.
Swollen Battery
A swollen battery would apply pressure to the motherboard or the keyboard itself, causing interference with the laptop's operations.
- Stop using the laptop immediately. Turn off the power, disconnect all accessories, and unplug the charger cable.
- Inspect the battery.
- If the battery is swollen, remove the battery carefully and replace it.
Loose Internal Components
Broken screws and/or broken standoffs could cause loose internals in any of the internal electronics. This could cause a multitude of issues for the laptop's operation, including shorts, breaks, and even a total failure of laptop components if not taken care of properly. If any internals of the laptop are loose:
- Stop using the laptop, power it off, and disconnect all accessories
- Flip it over to inspect the bottom access plate to start the removal process.
- Remove the bottom plate to access the laptop's internals.
- Inspect for loose items and try to identify the type of issue. (Loose, snapped, chafed, unsoddered, etc.).
Faulty Motherboard
If all other diagnoses fail, a faulty motherboard is a likely candidate for the issue
Software Issues
Outdated software can cause system malfunctions on the Chromebook.
factory reset:
- Check the Wi-Fi and make sure it is working
- Go to system settings and check for Chrome OS updates
- If there is an update, then update the Chromebook
- If the update does not work, then we will reset to factory settings
- Sign out of your Chromebook.
- Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
- Select Restart.
- In the box that appears, select Powerwash, then Continue.
OS Update:
Navigate to the bottom right corner where the time is, and click it.
- Look for the gear icon in the bottom right and click on that. Then, look for ChromeOS at the bottom of the list and click "Check" for updates. It will check for updates and download them automatically.
- The system will require a restart, and the update will be complete.
Improper Settings
Many accessibility features, or even language settings, can throw off how a particular (specific?) keyboard operates.
- Go to the settings menu and access keyboard settings
- Ensure proper settings for your keyboard
Debris Under Key
Debris within the computer can cause the keys to not fully activate because it will block the full motion of the keys.
- Carefully examine the outside of the keyboard for crumbs, dust, or other foreign objects.
- Power off the device, flip the device upside down, and gently shake and tap the back of the keyboard.
