When experiencing pooling and stagnant water under the sink, mildew and mold are soon to follow. Follow this troubleshooting guide to identify and address leaking associated to your garbage disposal.

Causes

1

When the mounting assembly that holds the disposal to the sink is loose, the entire garbage disposal can vibrate, shake, hum and leak. Inspect mounting bolts, and tighten with a wrench if loose.

2

Between the sink and the disposal is a rubber gasket, which when old can crack, tear, and fall apart. Turn off power to the disposal unit, and inspect the gasket for any visible signs of damage or wear by flexing the piece in your hands. In the event of damage, replace the gasket.

3

The unit has two inlets and one outlet. The inlets are from the sink, and a dishwasher, and the outlet is to the drain. If the hoses are loose or not properly secured, the garbage disposal will leak. Inspect hose connections, tighten, and test for the leak.

4

The unit has two inlets and one outlet. The inlets are from the sink, and a dishwasher, and the outlet is to the drain. If these tubes are loose or damaged, the disposal will leak. Inspect these tubes, and if loose and leaking water, the entire unit may need replacing.

5

Another location of gaskets and seals is internal to the unit. These rubber seals will wear over time and need replacing. If you are able to source the faulty seal, then disassemble and replace. Otherwise, your garbage disposal unit may be serviceable by a professional.
