My Problem
My macbook stopped working and the screen would be grey on startup, sometimes with a blinking folder with a question mark.
My Fix
I replaced the hard drive, but ran into the same startup issue. The hard drive I purchased had a USB enclosure. I was able to see that the my old hard drive was not busted and could boot up off the USB drive. After reading other reviews, I replaced the cable going to the hard drive. My sister had one lying around, so luckily I was able to grab hers.
My Advice
It was worth buying the hard drive kit with the tools and USB enclosure.
