My Problem
My phone's battery had gotten so terrible that I bought a battery case for it. Without the extra juice, the phone barely lasted 6 hours. I didn't want to upgrade yet and thought I'd suffer through. A few months later, I dropped the phone for the umpteenth time and the screen shattered. I still didn't want to upgrade, given that the iPhone is mid-cycle. I was also going to be travelling for the next 2 weeks and needed a quick solution. Instead of trying to find a reputable repair shop in an unfamiliar town and spending a ton of money, I turned to iFixit and had the replacement parts shipped overnight to my hotel.
My Fix
The whole process took about an hour. The suction cup did not work well on a shattered screen. I tried taping it up, but the suction cup wouldn't attach to the tape either. The other part I struggled with was prying up the battery.
My Advice
I didn't pay enough attention to the orientation of the home button when putting the screen back together, so I had to re-open the phone (much easier with an intact screen), and rotate it to correctly align with the contacts.
