My Problem

The camera on my iPhone 5 was taking bad pictures. At first, they were spotty. Dust maybe? I used the info on iFixit to open it up and look inside. Dust didn't seem to be the problem and it seemed the pictures were gradually getting worse. I was losing Instagram followers at an amazing rate. Actually, I was getting bummed out about taking pictures at all. What good is a phone without a decent camera? I took it to my friendly neighborhood Apple Genius and he let me know I could have the whole phone replaced for the low, low price of $250. They couldn't order just the camera part. I saw I could get one from iFixit and so began the rebirth of my phone.

My Fix

Since I had opened the phone before -- with some tools I got at the local computer joint -- I felt like it was going to be a breeze. As I looked through the instructions, though, I started to get worried. It looked like I was going to have to remove every screw in the whole darn phone. No worries, what's the worst thing that could happen? If I break the whole thing I'll just get an iPhone 6. Did I secretly want an iPhone 6? Possibly, but I'd also like to keep that money in my pocket, so I put my head down and went to work. I put everything on a large tray in front of the laptop screen and pulled a desk light over head and took my time. I even went to my son's school performance after I took it apart and before replacing the camera. I don't recommend leaving the project and coming back if you can allow yourself a couple hours. Put on some Netflix, some music, or something and go slow and steady. If you have to quit in the middle and come back, never fear. Just keep things organized.

My Advice

I built a custom screw tray out of LEGO® parts. Each tray held the screws and brackets for each step, so when I was done taking it apart I just had to turn around and go in reverse. Then when I was done my screw tray became a house for a homeless minifigure.

At the end of the day, the photos on the
