Background and Identification ¶

Released on March 7, 2006, the Canon PowerShot A540 is a versatile 6.0 megapixel camera with a high-quality 4x optical zoom lens. The camera takes 2 AA sized alkaline batteries, or can be charged with a separate ACK800 AC Adapter kit.

Built with a 2.5 inch LCD screen with 85,000 pixels of resolution, the A540 model is an easy-to-use and highly functional camera with built in flash for taking pictures or recording video. It has 21 shooting modes for different situations/weather conditions, including settings for portraits, beaches, snow, and fireworks.

The camera is 90.4 x 64.0 x 43.2 millimeters (3.56 x 2.52 x 1.70 inches) and 180 grams (6.35 ounces). The camera comes with 2 AA alkaline batteries, a MultiMediaCard MMC-16M SD card, a wrist strap, a USB cable, and an AV cable. The name of the camera appears clearly on the very front near the lens and on the top near the settings wheel.

In 2006, Canon issued a recall for all A530 and A540 models. There was a defect that caused a short, which made the camera overheat, sometimes causing burns to users, and drastically hindering battery life. Canon replaced all defective units free of charge, whether under warranty or not.
