I just replaced a good acquaintance's Iphone 4S screen.
Aside from the proximity sensor, his phone is working, but volume from the earpiece is apparently very low.
The only reason I could understand it sounding muted
is I used normal cellophone tape to attach the recycled grill. If this is the issue, what would be the proper way to reattach it?
Any input would be appreciated.

Sounds like you may have put the tape on and it is covering the holes for the sound coming through the ear speaker.

As Brent said, "the tape is covering the hole for the sound coming through the ear speaker".
Use tape or adhesive at the edges of the speaker mesh, so not to block the sound waves which must travel through the mesh.
