Broken hinge

Alas, hinges on the Titanium series were not made out of titanium. This oversight by Apple means that broken hinges are an all-too-common problem on Titanium PowerBooks. Hinge repair is one of the few installations best left to professionals. Apple glued the display assembly tightly together, making opening the display without damaging the thin metal casing very difficult. For those who know exactly what they're getting into, we do offer hinges for sale. Please note that we do not have installation instructions available for these hinges.

A much easier installation is replacing the entire display assembly, which includes the hinges. We do offer complete LCD assemblies as well as installation instructions.PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI Display Replacement

Some pictures uploaded would certainly help ascertain the extent of your damage. Please look here to see if this is what you need: http://www.weloveMacs.com/clcopforg4ti.h...

Consider hooking up to an external monitor and external keyboard to make this a desktop machine.

Video cable problem. Check the LVDS cable connection on the logic board. If it's not the problem buy a used but in good condition screen assy for the DVI Titanium on ebay. Opening the Titanium display is a nightmare (bezel glued and fragile) but you can do the repair (LVDS cable replacement ) if you're determined.

Carolina, since you have screen lightning the inverter circuitry is still working but the cable that brings image to the screen must be damaged in the broken hinge or disconnected from the LCD panel or form the logic board. Does the computer boots ? Do your hear the chime when pushing on the power button ?

by

Thanks Lemerise.

I do hear the the chime and power up when I turn it on but the screen is white.

I connected it to an external monitor and I get the blue apple screen but that's all.

Could you boot from your installation disk and check if your hard drive appears in the Disk Utility window. There's a possibility that the hard drive was damaged by the impact. There's also a possibility that the logic board has a problem since you don't get video on the external. The final question is: do you really want to repair this machine or buy another one ?

by

I'm beginning to think I just need to buy another one !

I've searched this and found way too many people who had the same problem. Apple should have recalled.

Thanks for you help and I guess I need to go shopping. ( Bah !)

Remember this sites name? It is possible to replace the LVDS cable and hinges. But I agree - not an easy task. I did this a few times and glued the display casing back together using cyanacrylat.

http://www.thebookyard.com stocks all spares needed, sorry but i didn't check iFixit.

The most difficult part of the job is fiddelin' the LVDS through the gap in the bottom case since the cable is really fragile.
