What you said in your second response is different than the question. Are you getting a folder with a question mark or a log in screen asking for name and password?

A folder with a question mark means the computer can not find a system folder. If this is the case then insert your system installation disk hold down the "C" key and see if it will start.

A question mark usually means the computer can't find a bootable drive. Can you boot the computer from your OS disk? If you can select disk utilities and run disk repair. If you are unable to do that you may need to reformat the drive and reinstall your OS. Ralph

Have you tried using your account name

(for example your account name is usually your full name, can also be found in the accounts section of the system preferences, Not your short name which your home folder will have)

as for a password, try just logging in without a password.
