Does not Load OS, Tried disc Utility but does not Fix volume

Hey guys I have a iBook g4 with a OS 10.4 tiger and I tried starting it and all i would get would be a grey screen with the loading wheel you see after start up. I have used the hardware test disc and it said there was no problems. When I use the OS X 10.4 DVD and use the Disk Util. It says that a volume needs to be repaired but when I click disk repair it cannot fix it. What can I do. If I load in a fresh copy of the 10.4 OS will I lose all of my files on the hard Drive? Also if I have another mac avail. could I use my iBook as a slave and transfer my files to another mac? Please Help

If you just reinstall the system and don't erase the hard drive you will lose nothing. Chose the archive and install option. I would do what rj said to back up your files before installing. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545

Yes there is a way to transfer files. Its called target disk mode. I've included the URL to Apple on how to do the procedure. After you have transferred your files I would recommend formatting your drive and reinstalling your operating system. Good luck Ralph

Back up your files, erase the HD and install a fresh system and you'll know if the HD has a software or hardware issue.

I ran the hardware test disk and it said that there were no problems so im assuming that it could just be a faulty hard drive
