I'm having the dead video problem as well but don't care about the laptop itself. I am looking for a way to get the data off the hard drive without any video. Is there a way to do it remotely from another computer or perhaps pull the drive out and use an enclosure?

Use Target mode. Hook it up to another Mac via a firewire cable and start it up holding down the "T" key. The hard drive icon will show up on the screen of the other Mac.

you can pull the drive out install in an enclosure and use Linux or another mac to get your data. I am assuming you have no video of any sort.
You can also remote into the laptop, only if that option is currently setup. ( SSH etc).
You may also want to check out the nvidia recall for this laptop. ( you can check at the apple store to see if your laptop qualifies, if it does, it will be repaired for free).
Something i would look into, i have had a few laptops fixed under this recall and once done, would solve your current problem. ( Only takes couple days for apple store to replace the motherboard in most cases).
