monitor won't stay illuminated unless I open it very wide or narrow

When I am using my MacBook white 2008 with battery or ac (not a power issue), the monitor needs to be in one or 2 very specific positions in order to make it light up. I think it might be a switch in the hinge or something. Any advice?

sounds to me like it's your inverter cable. see this guide for replacing it.

MacBook Core 2 Duo Inverter Cable Replacement

as for teh cable itself, please provide us with the last 3 digits of your serial number and we will be able to provide you with the exact part number as there are a few versions of the cable.

I agree with pierrej, if you can still dimly see the desktop when it goes out. Here's my guide on that: MacBook Core 2 Duo LCD & Inverter A1181 (fast method) Replacement

If you can't see the desktop, you will most likely need to replace the Display Data Cable. We need that serial number.
