General procedure to find out the problem?

Hi People

I really like this page, it is great to find so many tips on how to save money by repairing your mac by yourself.

Unfortunately, I was not able to find a procedure to find out what causes the problem and therefore what needs to be replaced.

I can't switch on my macbook (white, from 2006). The battery is working, RAM and HD are OK. Ithink that either the keyboard is broken or the logic board. Is there a method to find out which one causes the problem before buying expensive parts to repair it?

I am not a Mac expert but I do have a few of the service manuals. Here is the service manual for the late 2006 Macbook, the latter part of the manual strictly deals with trouble shooting and you might just find what you are looking for. Once the Mac gurus see your question, I am convinced that you will get the proper help. Until then, good look

THX for the manual, it was exactly what I was looking for

The very first thing to do on repairing any Mac is to determine which one you have. There are four different 2006 white MacBooks. They have four different processors. This information is needed to get you to the correct parts and guides. It's found in the battery compartment. We can also look it up from the last three figures of your serial number. Next, assume nothing. How do you know the battery, RAM and hard drive are working? Always try to get a history on the machine, problems are sometimes progressive. Apple techs have manuals on the procedures taken to identify various problems. Please give us the serial figures, and history and what you have done so far. Thanks

UPDATE

with the serial number I can identify your machine as:

Apple MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 1.83 13" Specs

Identifiers: Late 2006 - MA699LL/A - MacBook2,1 - A1181 - 2121

I'll change the picture in the upper right to the correct one. You can then click on the guides link

Hi, the serial is 4H6471R9WGN.

Right after the mac stopped working, I removed the HD and put it in another mac to save the content. On this occasion i also tried out the RAM and Battery, which both worked perfectly.

Having another Book to test parts is great. Now all I know is that it doesn't work. I need symptoms. I need to know what it will do. Lights, sounds. We usually look at the power first. What is the the MagSafe light doing? One of the best tools is the original installation disk. Do a SMC reset by removing the battery and the MagSafe adapter and press the power button for 10 seconds. Then reconnect the MagSafe and give it a try.

+ You have a good approach here. However, this era of MacBook is known for the upper deck cracking and/or chipping. It is often replaced to improve the laptop's aesthetics. When this part is replaced the serial number is changed since this is the part the serial number resides on.

AB, I would think that someone would be aware if their topcase has been replaced. I use new ones with no serial number and move the stickers.
