I know that you can reset it on a Mac with command option P R but does it get reset when the battery is unplugged, OS reinstalled or updated?

Unplug battery & mag-safe, Press and hold power on button 10 seconds. Reconnect batter and mag-safe. It will reboot on it’s it own.

Does not reset with updates as far as i know.

To add to Mayers answer: Pressing and holing the power button allows the logic board to full discharge after disconnecting the battery (I tend to hold it a bit larger than 10 sec, I go for 30). This zero's the NVRAM, you can tell you got it when you restart as the fan will start up in high RPM.

And lastly, some settings are also held in EFI as well as within the booting OS file system. Which is why they don't clear when you reset the NVRAM.
