replacing Hard Drive

Im at step 28 or so, where I am to remove the upper case, but there is a silver like rivet almost in the middle preventing me from removing the case. Im afraid i'll break it. No screw from underneath. I've got this far, any suggestions?

Is this what you're talking about?

It's a magnet, lift it out and there's a screw underneath it.

Good point. It didn't occur to me that that might be what he was referring to, because the guides all mention prying up the magnet, but it does sound likely now that I think of it.

You have to look at the 12 inch G3iBook instructions, the 14 inch G3 iBook doesn't show removing the magnet

Weird...it sounds like the guide needs an update. I can understand how that would be confusing if it didn't mention the magnet situation, and this was your first iBook disassembly.

Noted, and fixed. Thanks for catching that, and sorry for the oversight!

Hi! I don't know which guide you're looking at or which model iBook, so I don't know which step 28...could you possibly provide a link to the exact picture, and then describe the location of the rivet?

The topcase of an iBook should only have phillips head screws...does this rivet have a phillips head? Could it have been a phillips head, but maybe now it's stripped? I'm wondering if maybe someone put a non-standard screw into this machine while doing a previous repair?

Some generic suggestions -- you can use a dremel tool to cut the head off a screw, or cut a groove into it so that you can use a flathead screwdriver to get it out, etc.
