My MacBook makes weird sounds since yesterday evening. It rattles in regular intervals, kind of like breathing. Any suggestions what that could be?

The most common mechanical sound is the cooling fan. Often times dust and debris builds up on the blades causing them to become unbalanced so the blade hits the wall making sound.

Simply put your system needs a good internal cleaning. Get a small soft paint brush and a can of can’ed air. Pop off the bottom cover following this guide MacBook Air 13" Early 2015 Lower Case Replacement so you can carefully scrub the logic board and the fan of the build up junk and then use the can’ed air to blow it away.
