You may have already done this, but for the sake of completion:

First, backup your data and restore through iTunes. If you're lucky, it could be a software issue.

Next, you could make sure that the connection is good. The home button is connected by a gold plate on the front panel touching a gold spring on the logic board (you can see it in the pic of step 1 here).

After that, it gets to be a bit more of an expensive and difficult repair...

I had the same problem yesterday with my iPod Touch 2nd Generation. There was no activity when I pushed the home button. The ipod battery was fully discharged but pushing on the sleep button for a moment activated the red battery indicator on screen. Plugged the ipod on my mac for half an hour and it's working now.

Actually-- it is probably a hardware issue. The part that needs to be replaced is the small metal collaboration/wire underneath the button, attached to the underside of the screen. I doubt you can buy this by itself anywhere, but you might try tearing it off an old iPod.

meekie, why would you use water ;-) don't do it. Anyhow you can try what lemerise suggested with his answer or you can try to restore your ipod first and see what happens. And you should really ask your own question....

The part that itronicsrepair is speaking of is called the "home flex cable" or ribbon, depending who is listing it on Ebay. And yes, you can buy them singly, they'll cost you around $4.99.

Have fun opening it, because messing with that one little cable will be the least of your worries....
