Microphone issues after updating to iOS 12 from iOS 10

I never updated to iOS 11 but held onto the last iOS 10 update as long as possible. A few days after updating to 12, my iPhone’s microphones stopped worked. I received a notice from voice memos stating that “no audio devices found.” Keep in mind, I am able to record videos but no sound will be recorded. I took it to the Apple Store and they said it was a hardware issue with the bottom microphone so I ordered the part and fixed it myself. After repairing the part (ordered from ifixit), the microphones still aren’t working and I’m getting the same message. I’m led to believe it’s a software bug but I don’t understand why if I skipped over 11 and all of the mic problems for the 7s with it. Any help or theories would be appreciated. I’m not ruling out the C12 chip problem but it doesn’t make sense to me with the software being the main cause for this. Thanks.

I suspect the Audio IC as well. This can happen seemingly out of nowhere and usually follows a reboot of an affected device, like when you shut it down to repair it or update it. Once rebooted, the phone exhibits symptoms that were never present before.

Other typical symptoms are:

  1. Voice Memos app / Loudspeaker on call - greyed out
  2. Siri doesn’t hear you / Caller can’t hear you
  3. Most other Audio related issues that aren’t solved by modular replacements
  4. Long boot times (3-5 minutes)
  5. iTunes detects the phone but stuck on the Apple Logo

This is a repairable problem but it requires a micro-soldering repair. Although it can be a routine repair for an experienced tech, it can go sideways very quickly as the Audio IC is directly opposite the underfilled Baseband CPU.  An unqualified tech can apply too much heat and cause massive problems. So do your due diligence.
