The shift keys are not functioning

But the caps lock is working but it’s still in uppercase

by

Check the viewer to test your keys if they don't show up then you will need a new keyboard or uppercase which every you find easier.

Look right above the Shift key on the left and see if the is a green light on the Caps Lock Key. If so, click on it till the light goes off ( usually just once).

not sure if sarcasm but its off>

Definitely not sarcastic. I've had people chew me out after I repair their computers because they would not come on. After in depth questioning I find out that their electricity has been shut off. So you learn to ask.

haha gotcha, i commend your effort I wouldnt be able to do that

Go into your system preferences > Keyboard - click on the Input Sources tab what is the keyboard listed and if you have more than one. I would also click on the ‘Show Input menu in menu bar so you can get to the keyboard viewer. Then see what the views shows you when the caps lock condition happens again are the keys stuck in uppercase and what happens when you press the shift keys (left and right) as well as the caps lock?

Let us know what you find.

Update (09/24/2018)

Sorry to say you’ll need to replace your keyboard, as you didn’t tell us your exact model I can’t aim you to the needed guide or the part.

Please locate your system from here: EveryMac - Lookup. To find your S/N go into About This Mac to copy it.

keys are all lowercase in the input menu> when i click left shift key (broken one) the keys stay lowercase> when i click right shift key the keys turn uppercase>

by

I think you'll find the menu option is a better view and all of the keys will show up with that viewer unlike the control panel one.

In any case how many keyboard input sources do you have just one or two or more?

At this point you do have a bad key, but that doesn't explain getting locked into caps. Did you have a liquid spill into your keyboard at some point? Or, did you use a spray cleaner directly onto the keyboard to clean it.

by

i just have one input source> i thought it was a bad key but the problem still persists after using a third party program to disable both shift keys as well as caps lock> did not have a recent liquid spill> i only used a keyboard cleaner and proper materials>

by

What can happen is the cleaner seeps into the switch elements and damages them. Spray cleaners which are directly sprayed onto the keys and then wiped off is often the way I see this damage. Ideally, you want to spray the cloth and then wipe the surfaces.

by

exactly what I did. its back to lowercase as of now but will likely change soon. do you think it could be anything other than keyboard problem? i have all the uppercase function keys disabled
